Impacting more than just your waistline.....
If you’re worried that your Sugar intake is causing weight gain, you may be justified in doing so. That’s not the only reason to be concerned about it though! If weight is not currently an issue for you, I wonder have you considered the impact that excess sugar consumption has on your skin? Accelerating Ageing... Recently in ‘O’ magazine, Patricia Farris, MD, a clinical associated professor of dermatology at Tulane University School of Medicine described sugar as “the devil when it comes to your skin”. The reason this rather dramatic description was used she explains is that once Sugar is in your bloodstream it grabs onto collagen and elastin molecules and turns their soft and supple fibres rigid and weak. This means that the collagen and elastin can no longer do their job of keeping your skin firm. She recommends that as well as limiting sugar and refined carbohydrates we should load up on whole foods like oats, nuts and berries which have soluble fibre that helps slow the body’s absorption of sugar. Think about the thousands of $'s we spend over our lifetime buying products to enhance collagen and firmness, it doesn't make sense to do this while sabotaging ourselves by the over consumption of sugar does it? Artificial sweetener the wolf in sheep's clothing... Beware the artificial sweetener too, they trigger sugar cravings and studies have shown that people that drink diet drinks gained 3 times more tummy fat over 9 years than those who don’t drink them. An effective way of lowering blood sugar according to the same article is to drink more water. Drinking 4 or more glasses of water daily will make you 21% less likely to develop high blood sugar according to a 2011 study than those who drink 2 or less glasses a day. Sugar by Stealth.... Sugar is the secret ingredient in so many of our foods these days, it’s disguised under many different names “Women’s Health” magazine recently published 56 of them which I’ve included below. Food manufacturers will often use multiple names for sugar so that they can list the ingredients separately thus pushing them down the list of ingredients and creating the impression that the sugar content is lower than it really is. *If you're ready to enjoy the health benefits of reducing your Sugar intake and you'd like some help in getting your mindset primed for success please give us a call on 0435 923 817 or for further information visit this page which gives details of the program we have to help break the sugar addiction.
