In a recent article in Business Insider Australia Professor of Exercise Science at the University of Texas Philip Stanforth discussed the value of exercise in weight loss. In the article he concluded that while exercise doesn't play as important a role as watching what you eat when losing weight, it certainly helps and it really comes into it's own when it comes to maintaining your weight.
When you consider that once you have reached your optimal calorie intake for the day that to work off 500 calories you may have to walk as much as 3.5 miles or 5.6 kilometers, it certainly drives home the importance of watching what you eat in the first place. A 100gm chocolate bar e.g. Snickers contains as much as 488 calories and these are the type of treat many of us eat on the go without even remembering to include it as part of our daily intake! We refer to this as convenience food, but it hardly seems convenient when it converts to fat on our body and we are left to drag it around everywhere with us!
