Why are people overweight?
I don’t think there are many people that would chose to be overweight. For most (not all) people the way to weight loss would seem to be quite straight forward, eat less move more = lose weight. Yet it doesn’t happen that way does it? There are a lot of smart people carrying weight they don’t want even though they ‘know’ what they need to do in order to lose it. So why is that? Why is it that all knowledge can be so easily eclipsed by even the slightest temptation? Why do we find ourselves walking to the pantry in a trance like state and helping ourselves to all of those food items we swore we weren’t going to ever eat again EVER! The fact is that the reasons are wide and varied, the one thing that they all have in common is that they are buried in our subconscious. Being buried in our subconscious doesn’t make them less potent, in fact quite the reverse. It simply means that our conscious mind is often left out of the loop when the sequence of events that leads to us eating things we know we shouldn’t be eating occurs. Good intentions.... All behaviours come from good intention. Our subconscious is constantly at work to protect and care for us, the problem is that its methods are often outdated or misguided. For example if we were given food treats to cheer us up or reward us when we were kids, it’s likely that now when we’re feeling out of sorts our subconscious will generate this food reward behaviour (eating treats) because it knows it has worked to resolve this problem (feeling off) in the past . It’s become a default pattern. So how do you change a deeply ingrained pattern like that? By developing a new one to replace it! This can be done far more effectively and efficiently using Hypnotherapy because during Hypnotherapy the changes are made at a subconscious level, this means that the minds critical factor is put at ease and stands to one side while deep change occurs. When you try to make these changes at a conscious level you often meet a lot of resistance from your critical factor with self defeating thoughts like “I never stick to anything”, “I’ve had one biscuit now I might as well eat the whole pack because I’ve already failed”, this is what so often prevents a new habit becoming dominant over an old one. In Hypnotherapy the default setting can be changed by allowing the client to feel they’ve experienced the new habit in progress several times while in Hypnosis. By having had this imagined experience the new habit becomes like a recently used file on a computer and moves to the top of the list for selection the next time it’s required i.e. when a situation triggers the subconscious to look for a response. A skilled Hypnotherapist will take their client through the experience of change a number of times. As an accredited Virtual Gastric Band specialist I help clients to experience a new normal when it comes to their relationship with food. They become comfortable with the idea that they can be satisfied with less food and find making healthier choices becomes second nature. During the course of my 4 session program I give them a recording to listen to, which if listened to every day for 28 days will create the new mindset they need for long lasting weight loss. I love working with people on this program because I see them get the results they want and deserve, and see them amazed by how simple the process felt. It makes my job as a therapist very fulfilling. *Ready to change your life? The process is life changing, and it’s substantially cheaper and safer than the invasive surgical procedure. A lot of Private Health Funds will pay benefits for Weight Loss through Hypnotherapy too (Hypfocus is eligible because I’m a member of the AHA and have attained the appropriate level of training to satisfy participating Private Health Funds) this reduces the cost further.
