Are You Terrified Of Flying?Have you ever been faced with the prospect of going on a flight, and been terrified of how your fear would drive you to behave? Do you break out in a cold sweat just thinking about getting on a plane? Read on to find out how I helped a recent client overcome this.... A Client With Fear Of FlyingLast week I had a client call me in quite a panic. She had had the terrible experience of being trapped in a lift while pregnant. The ongoing consequence had been that she had developed acute claustraphobia, and not only was she unable to face the prospect of going in a lift, the phobia had extended so that the idea of being on a plane and seeing the flight attendant close the plane door sent waves of extreme paralysing terror over her. So why was she calling me in a state of panic last week? Because the following Monday she was booked to fly to the other side of the world to visit her family and she was paralyised with fear at the thought of it. This is someone that had previously travelled the world without giving it a second thought, she had booked the flight home without considering that she would be adversely affected by her experience in the lift, but as the date of departure grew closer the picture of that plane door closing kept popping into her head and the fear increased in intensity until she became firmly convinced that she'd never be able to do it. As much as she was desperate to see her family and introduce them to her youngest child, the fear just seemed too insermountable. This is how I helped her overcome her fear with EFT and HypnotherapyI had heard similar stories many times before. Each one of course unique to the person telling me but the one thing common to all was that I was very confident that I could help them. This lady came to see me, not knowing what to expect. She was highly anxious when she entered my consulting room, on the way to the appointment she began to feel fearful about what Hypnotherapy might mean for her, she was asking herself questions like "what if I can't come out of the Trance", "what if I lose control". I spent some time reassuring her that she would be safe and in control; I understand the fears and concerns that cross peoples minds when they haven't met me before, it's only human to have some trepidation and of course if you are already in a state of high anxiety the trepidation is extremely heightened. So we got to work, understanding the fear from her persepctive. I used EFT (Emotional Freedom Technique) to lower her Anxiety levels and enable her to safely focus on the fearful thoughts so that she could process them more effectively. This process is always like peeling the layers of an onion. Once fear has been triggered, the brain tends to create layers of protective skin to protect the fear, because it believes it's a survival response required to keep you alive. Once we had worked through the layers of fear we proceeded with some NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and then some Hypnotherapy to release the fears. While in a light Trance we were able to allow her mind to resolve the unresolved fears that had triggered her phobia. The result was a much calmer client sitting in front of me at the end of the session. She was quite bemused by how different she felt, she said the weight had been lifted from her chest, and she was visibly relieved. We discussed her upcoming flight and she said very confidently that she could do it, the door closing no longer filled her with dread. She flew out last Monday! That's why I love what I do.
