Facial blushing is an involuntary reddening of the face due to embarrassment or stress. When stimulated the nerves prompt the blood vessels to open wide, flooding the skin with blood and causing reddening of the face. In some people, the ears, neck and chest are also affected.
Occasionally there may be an underlying medical problem e.g. rosacea, and it can also be exacerbated during menopause (hot flushes) so it’s important to have this checked out.
People that experience this involuntary response to embarrassment can become very self-conscious about it and it can lead to avoiding situations where the person thinks it’s likely to occur. This can become very limiting, often holding people back from opportunities in their career and from connecting with others socially.
Involuntary blushing can often occur in people with social phobia, Hypnotherapy is a very effective method of helping people to overcome excessive blushing. Using a combination of psychotherapy and hypnosis to significantly reduce the stimulus that triggers the blushing episode.
When clients come to me about this issue I work with them to identify and assess the triggers that they experience and then use the information gathered to teach specific breathing techniques and pattern interrupt techniques (which quickly reduce the symptoms of anxiety that lead to blushing). I then ensure that they are feeling completely at ease and provide a safe environment in which they can utilise the power of their imagination while in a light trance to confront fears and control their responses to typical triggers. In this process internal controls are established and deeply embedded throughout the therapy process.
Hypnotherapy is an effective empowering process which leaves clients feeling confident that they can handle the situations that they previously would have either dreaded or avoided completely.
Although the process itself is gentle the results are very powerful.
