![]() In today's post, I'm reviewing weighted blankets. Weighted blankets have become increasingly common and are touted as a great way to improve the quality and quantity of sleep enjoyed by the person beneath them. The guidelines are that you chose a blanket approximately 10% of your body weight. To test drive this blanket I purchased one a couple of weeks ago, having done some research I saw that they were on sale via Groupon so I took the plunge and purchased one at the discounted price of $99. What does the research say? According to Gaby Badre, M.D., Ph.D., associate professor at the University of Gothenburg and medical director of the sleep disorders clinic (SDS Kliniken) in Gothenburg, Sweden; the theory behind weighted blankets is that they may work, in part, by providing a firm, deep pressure stimulation. which is cocooning and reassuring. Each time the person beneath the blanket moves the material inside the blanket creates a light, stroking tactile sensation which the brain interprets as a caress and consequently releases neurotransmitters triggering nervous system activity in ways that decrease overarousal and anxiety. In studies conducted by Gaby Badre 4 out of 5 participants reported improved sleep and less time awake during the night. Other studies have shown that the weighted blanket improved sleep and that participants got to sleep faster when it was tested on kids with ADHD. Another study focusing on kids with ASD found that while there was no notable change in sleep patterns for the participants that they consistently gave feedback that they preferred the weighted blanket. It is an unusually comfortable (if at first strange) feeling to be so 'snugly' held beneath a blanket. It does appear to slow down and decrease restlessness Do I recommend weighted blankets? Yes. Based on my experience and the research I've read I personally think this is a worthwhile investment for anyone struggling with getting to sleep or experiencing broken sleep. It is a comfortable experience and I found it quite soothing.
