The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion

The Unselected Journals of Emma M. Lion by Beth Brower

This is a change of pace. Beth Brower's series is told through the journal of Emma Lion, a young woman in 1880s London who returns to her family home some years after losing her father and finds herself dealing with an inheritance, some difficult relatives and a fair amount of London society.

Emma is sharp, stubborn and often very funny. The journal format means short entries that are easy to dip into, and the humour sits alongside quieter moments about grief and working out who she is. There are several volumes, so if you like the first you have more to look forward to.

I think there's real value in reading something that is simply enjoyable. A book like this can be a nice way to wind down at the end of the day, away from screens.

Why you might enjoy it: If you like witty heroines, Victorian settings or books in the style of Jane Austen with a lighter touch, this series is worth a look.
