Support for depression, low mood and overthinking

What is depression?

Depression is more than feeling sad for a few days. It can show up as a heavy, flat mood that lingers, a loss of interest in things you used to enjoy, poor sleep, low energy and a harsh inner voice that seems to have an opinion on everything you do. Some people feel numb or as if they are "going through the motions", while still holding down work and family life. Others find it hard to get out of bed.

Depression is common, it is not a personal failing and it is treatable. It often has many contributing factors, including life events, stress, health, relationships and patterns of thinking that have built up over time. The most helpful support is usually a team approach, which is why hypnotherapy at Hypfocus is offered as a complement to care from your GP, psychologist or psychiatrist, not as a replacement for it.

How does hypnotherapy help?

As a Clinical Hypnotherapist and Counsellor with more than a decade of experience, Georgina Mitchell works with people who feel stuck in low mood and overthinking. Hypnotherapy offers a deeply relaxed, focused state in which it can become easier to step back from heavy thoughts, ease tension in the body and practise new, kinder ways of responding to yourself.

Many people describe their low mood as a loop: the same thoughts playing over and over ("What's wrong with me?", "Why did I say that?", "Nothing will change"). This is called rumination. Researchers have found that a set of brain areas known as the default mode network is involved in our inner world: daydreaming, remembering, imagining the future and thinking about ourselves. This network is not "bad". It helps us plan, create and make meaning. In depression, though, studies suggest it can become harder to switch out of, so attention keeps getting pulled back into those self-critical loops. The research is still developing and varies between studies, but it offers a helpful way to understand why simply "thinking positively" or trying to push thoughts away rarely works. In fact, trying hard not to think about something tends to bring it back more strongly.

Hypnotherapy works with this differently. Small studies of hypnosis suggest that the focused, relaxed state can quieten some of that self-focused chatter while keeping a strong connection between attention and the body. In sessions, we use this state to practise noticing thoughts gently, rather than fighting them.

Working with subconscious patterns

Georgina often uses the image of a kind teacher in a playground. Your thoughts are like children at play. Most of the games are fine, some are creative and joyful, and the teacher is happy to let them be. Every now and then a game turns rough or goes round and round in circles. A good teacher doesn't shout, ban the child from the playground or pretend it isn't happening. They notice, calmly name what's going on ("Ah, that's the 'not good enough' game again") and gently guide things in a better direction.

In hypnotherapy, we work with both the conscious and subconscious mind to strengthen that calm, warm teacher within you. Over time, many people find they can:

  • notice an unhelpful loop sooner, without judging themselves for having it

  • step back and watch thoughts, rather than being swept along by them

  • respond to themselves with more kindness and steadier boundaries

  • reconnect with activity, rest and the things that matter to them.

This isn't about forcing happiness or "switching off" your thoughts. It's about loosening old emotional patterns and building a gentler relationship with your own mind.

Signs of depression

Everyone has low days. It may be worth seeking support if several of these have been present most days for two weeks or more:

  • Persistent low, flat or empty mood

  • Losing interest or pleasure in things you used to enjoy

  • Overthinking, replaying conversations or getting stuck in negative loops

  • A harsh inner critic, feelings of guilt or worthlessness

  • Tiredness and low energy, even after rest

  • Sleeping too much or too little

  • Changes in appetite or weight

  • Difficulty concentrating or making decisions

  • Withdrawing from friends, family or activities

  • Feeling irritable, tearful or numb

  • Feeling as though you’re just “going through the motions”

  • Thoughts that life isn’t worth living (please see the support note below and reach out today)

If you recognise yourself here, a good first step is to talk with your GP, who can check for physical causes and discuss a Mental Health Treatment Plan. Hypnotherapy can then sit alongside that care.

How we work together

Free 15-minute call. We start with a relaxed chat by phone so you can ask questions and we can see whether hypnotherapy feels like the right fit for you.

Initial session (up to 90 minutes). We take time to understand your history, what low mood looks like for you, what support you already have in place and what you’d like to be different. You’ll experience hypnosis for the first time in a gentle, guided way, and you remain aware and in control throughout.

Standard sessions (up to 60 minutes). Each session blends counselling and hypnotherapy, tailored to where you are that week. We focus on easing rumination, building self-compassion, settling the nervous system and taking small, achievable steps back towards the things you value.

Your recording. You’ll receive a hypnotherapy recording to listen to between sessions. Regular listening helps reinforce the work we do together and gives you a calm, supportive tool you can turn to at home.

Working alongside your care team. With your permission, Georgina is happy to work alongside your GP, psychologist or other health professionals. Please continue any prescribed medication and speak with your doctor before making changes.

Sessions are held at Hypfocus Therapies, 10 Conder Way, Mentone.

Frequently asked questions

Can hypnotherapy cure depression?

No therapy can promise a cure, and everyone’s experience is different. Hypnotherapy is offered as a complementary support that may help ease overthinking, improve relaxation and build kinder thinking habits, alongside care from your GP or mental health professional.

Do I need to stop seeing my GP or psychologist, or stop my medication?

Not at all. Hypnotherapy works best as part of a team approach. Please keep seeing your existing practitioners and never change medication without talking to your doctor.

Will I lose control under hypnosis?

No. Hypnosis is a natural, focused state, a bit like being absorbed in a good book. You can hear everything, you can speak if you wish and you can open your eyes at any time.

How many sessions might I need?

It varies from person to person. Some people notice they feel calmer after the first session, and many find that a program of around six sessions gives new patterns time to settle. We’ll review your progress together as we go.

Is hypnotherapy suitable for everyone with depression?

Hypnotherapy may not be suitable during a crisis, or for some conditions such as psychosis. During your free call and initial session, we’ll talk through your situation, and if another kind of support would serve you better, Georgina will let you know.
